Teachers claim breach of contract, sue School Board

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2013 | Contract Disputes |

In addition to the laws at the federal and state levels that govern workplaces and provide protection for both employees and employers in Fort Lauderdale and elsewhere, in some situations these two sides may also sign employment contracts. These legally binding documents typically outline other terms, conditions and expectations for employment.

According to reports, a group of 12 teachers and the Jefferson Federation of Teachers have filed a lawsuit against the local school board for breach of contract. The union and teachers reportedly argue that the School Board has gone back on several of the promises included in contracts that the school system administration drew up itself. The two sides have, according to reports, been without a contract since 2012 when the board declined to renew the collective bargaining agreement it had with the teachers’ union. This is reportedly just the most recent in several labor disagreements that have occurred between the School Board and teachers in Jefferson Parish since the failed contract negotiation.

The lawsuit is reportedly seeking to have the assurances that are outlined in the contracts, including a $400 supplemental insurance contribution for each teacher, daily planning time for all teachers and maintaining teachers’ vision, dental and life insurance policies, among other things. For their part, the School Board has not directly commented on the allegations or pending litigation.

Regardless of which side you are on, it may be of benefit to obtain legal representation if you are involved in a contract dispute. A lawyer will look out for your interests and can explain your options. In addition, an attorney will also be able to answer any other questions that you might have.
