In a recent move, the county commissioners unanimously voted to put an end to the latest saga in what has become a series of legal issues regarding development contracts.
The issue at hand was regarding asbestos-filled dirt that was used to build a freeway overpass. According to email communication, the deputy director from the Department of Transportation told the construction company to use the soil despite the fact that it had never been tested.
The construction company who was working on the project had to spend millions of dollars tearing down the contaminated section of road. As a result, they filed a lawsuit against Lee County. The settlement agreed to pay the company $1.5 million. This payout comes just three years after the county agreed to pay the contractor $1.89 million. A county attorney said that this settlement of this contract dispute potentially saved the city millions of dollars.
